A not-too-important question

The cast rear wheels on the late '40s A, B, and G tractors had four openings in them. These openings were shaped so that you could put a chain link through them and pull the rear wheel out on the axle (we used a hydraulic jack).

On the later ('51-'52) models, especially the A and the B (not sure about the G), there were four more holes added - they were round and formed the corners of a square pattern in the wheel.

Does anyone know what these additional (round) holes were for?

Thanks,

Stan

The only thing I have seen holes in the rear cast wheels for is to bolt those 150# wheel weights on. I thought those square holes were made so that when using a carriage bolt, you could remove the weights without completly removing the bolts. Russ

I couldn't agree more, but what are the round holes for (in the latest versions of the styled A & B tractors)?

Stan:

While the holes on the cast wheels would accept a chain, which could be used to pull the wheel outward, I thought they were originally placed there to accept wheel weight bolts...the squared headed kind.

Sorry, but I haven't a clue on the 4 holes added later...I know my 70 has these, too.

Though I know from experience that you can pass a log chain through them and around the tire and create a tire chain of sorts when and if you ever get hung up on ice, though I haven't had the need for that for some time. Hasn't snowed in north Florida for a while !

On the 70 we use those for round holes near the outer part of the casting to add duals. Russ

Wow !! I didn't think those holes would take that kind of strain !

We used a set of t-rail duals, and they had eyebolts that replaced four of the wheel nuts, and then the clamps drew up on those.

I still have the duals...it really made that 70 look big !
