I am restoring my 1939 A and was wondering if the front end could be converted to a wide front? I live in the Sierra Foothills in Ca. and it would make it a safer tractor. It has 36" rear wheels with what looks like beaded (safety) on the inside, I have never seen these as they usually come with 38". The parts to convert would probably be too expensive maybe unless there were after market parts..Thanks

I Live in the Sierra Foothills also and just finnished converting my 52 mod A to a wide front.
I looked for 2 mounths on the web all over the country and was lucky to have found one at rusty acres.com in woodland ca. and at a resonable price. I would like to help you with any questions you might have, but the e-mail will have to wait as I am now in Bangkok thailand for a few mounths

Probably the cheapest thing to do would be to sell your tractor and buy an AW (wide front tractor). You might be able to find a parts tractor with a wide front on it. I personally have never seen an aftermarket wide-front for this early a tractor. Perhaps they do exist. You should keep in mind that if you convert your tractor to an AW the collector value will be reduced. Also, most wide-fronts from these years are totally worn out and require a lot of time and money to fix. 36" tires are correct for 1939 A's and B's, same as unstyled. John Deere switched to 38" in late 1939 or 1940.
