60 with rough idle

I bought a 1955 model 60 gas that had a very rough idle, but straightened right out under just a small load. I took it apart and discovered a broken ring had cut a sizeable groove lengthwise in the left cylinder. I sandblasted the block, head, and manifold and had the block bored .045". I put in new Aluminum pistons, did a valve job, and rebuilt the carb.

I bought a shop manual from the local Deere dealer and reassembled the engine, torqued everything, set valve clearance, timing, carb adjustments, etc., by the book. I have also replaced the wiring, plugs, points, and lots of other things.

After all this, the rough idle is still there, mayby even worse. Compression is equal on both cylinders and slightly higher than spec. This problem seems like a vacuum leak, but I can't find one.

I am not sure if this is related, but when the tractor gets hot, gas comes out around the filler cap.

Has anybody out there encountered this problem or have any idea what to do. I have tried everything I can think of.

Sam, I had a 60 that I tuned and did everything that I could think of and it still ran sloppy unless under a slight pull. I finally discovered a leaky intake manifold gasket. That solved my problem.

I bought A 1955 jd 60 this time last year and incounterd the same problem only the left cylinder had rust pits to the tune of .042 deep
bored and sleeved the cylinder. Bought all new wire, coil, dis. cap, points, condensor, plug wires, plugs, and had carb rebuilt. The rough idle continued. It turned out to be that when the dealer sold me the coil they went by the book and sold me a 6 volt coil even though I had told them it was a twelve volt system. That ment that I needed to install a resister inline before the coil. Once I installed this the tractor runs better then new. I had many people on this and other boards who helped me. Enjoy your tractor
Thanks
Randy

Sam, it still sounds like a carb problem. Are the throttle plates centered & sealing good? Are the throttle shaft bushings worn & loose? If ok then do the idle screws effect the idle the same on both sides?..... ...Is the fuel boiling in the tank or is it just splashing out from around the cap?
