I have been using a 530 with a mounted double 7' sickle mower. The end of this summer it started making a lot of noise sort of under the floor, only while the pto is in gear, take the lever out of gear and it quits. The pto seems like it's strong/not slipping. The sound sort of sounds like it's stripping/gears not meshing fully. Just wondering about any opinions, if it's bearings, and the best way to take the thing apart to see what's going on/how involved it is.

alan from your discription it sounds like the bearing on the pto drive shaft with the bevel gear has failed. The bearing I am referring is part number JD 8561.The bad news is to be able to replace it you must remove both the sliding gear shaft and the counter shaft of the transmission.
I hope it is a simpler problem but that bearing would be my guess. You should be able to feel it by hand ,it is located below the clutch pulley and at the rear of the reduction cover in the main case. If you don"t have it the service manual for the 50, SM2010 gives very detailed directions. The
manual can be ordered from Deere at 1 800 522 7448. Good luck and I am sorry to be the barrer of
bad news.

just completed renewing PTO and hydraulic on my 530. I found that the thrust washer was gone on mine and this allowed the gears to be out of mesh, big time...noise was profound. Renewed everything, adjusted and works fine. Like the second responder said, you have to dissemble the transmission.
