This might be a dumb question but years from now, do you think it might be a problem to get parts for the 4000? I know they're part 4020 and 3020 but there must be some parts mainly for the 4000. Seems as though there wasn't as many made and only for a few years. Always wanted the chance to see one working, all i ever saw was pictures. But if had the chance i buy one in a heart beat, with power shift.

A thought I was't sure how many of those 4000 tractors around, I been looking in paper and on line have't find any for sale. my guess was't many of them, would be nice to know how many had been build those years. This one tractor I have not giving it up, I enjoy having it around using for Farm and Garden work, using it plow snow with this cab on it pretty good. soon would love to get it painted again after getting little work done on engine first. I have a 3 pt 5 bottom plow goes with it.

The guys on the posts below are correct on the discriptions. I have a promotion ad that J.D. put out when they came out with the 4000 and the ad was aimed at 3020 oweners to step up to 4020 power with out trading equipment. They advertised the 3020 as a 4 plow tractor and the 4020 as a 5 plow tractor. The ad said that 3020 onwers could step up to the 4000 and plow with thier 4 bottom plow in a higher gear and gain more P.T.O. HP for choppers. Acres per day is with of machine in feet x m.p.h. x 80% (80% of the time plowing, 20% on turns and losing m.p.h. sliping and losing m.p.h. when luging and loseing r.p.m.

The idea of using 3020 matched equipment with a 4000 and working in a higher gear is reinforced by something I read a while back - the 4000 was described as a "runner", not a "lugger".

Sounds like fun to me - wind that sucker up and let 'er roll!!

The 4000 uses a 4020 engine and a 3020 power train thats the reason for less weight , did not have Powershift available though . I'm pretty sure that's how it was . JIM

The transmission casting & most of the internals were the same on a 4000 or 4020. Some confusion occurs when comparing early or late models to each other. Late 4000's were avalable with power shift. The tractor was a loss leader to keep JD people from going to other colours. Or to encourage the 1st time ownership of a JD tractor by those looking for the cheapest tractor in the 100HP class.

The John Deere 4000 was available with both gas and diesel engines and with either Syncro-range OR powershift transmissions.

Both previous comments are pretty much correct. The late 4020 (1969-1972) and 4000 had the same engine / internal engine parts for the most part. The early 4020 (1964-1968) was an earlier design and were different than the 4000. These parts will fit the 4010 engine. The 4010 was originally a smaller bore engine and if ever overhauled the early 4020 sleeves and pistons were used in them making them a 404 cube. Hope this will help some more. Dave W.

The engines on the 4000&4020 tractors are the same 404 diesel. The main difference is the 4000 is an optioned down 4020 ,battery trays instead of boxes and about 1000lbs. lighter than a 4020, many did not have dif. lock. They were priced when new between a 4020 &3020 kind of a poor mans 4020.

The shipping weight of a 1971 4000 was 7670# a1971 4020 was 8555#. The weight savings were in trans, bell hsng. castings, lighter castings on rear wheel hubs a lighter front end casting etc. But many of the 4000's were optioned up by dealers or the farmers ordering them, ie. dif. lock, hd front end, weights etc. But a 4000 sitting next to a 4020 optioned the same was still 6-700# lighter. Also I think they used the 404 combine block in the 4000 Much thinner casting and not recomended for heavy loader work.

yeah I guess tractor not much for heavy loader work but it is sure a helping hand around every where I need it, loader sure is getting killed by the tractor from all work needs welding up again sometime. I not sure if this tractor can do work as 8 row 30" planter work on 3 point?, dad had been using it pull 12 row planter with dual tires on, 1200lbs in front and 2-250 tanks where loader sits on tractor it been doing this for 25 years and never stop till he stop farming only repair tractor had is head work and injectors plugs cleaning... not long ago I put in new clutch.. check out picture

Yes, Engine components are the same. Both the 4020 side console and 4000 use the exact same 404 motor. The 4010 being earlier would be different I am sure.
