Pulled the flywheel cover off my R and found that one of the 4 big spokes was cracked clean into. Does anyone have an idea on what caused this and were I can get a used one. I know it will have to be truck shipped if it's to far to drive. I don't have much of a choice. Has anyone ever seen one welded?? Is it posible?? Thanks

Sorry, but I am not real familiar with the "R" models. I have worked on a few of the old JD's though. Depending on exactly where the flywheel is cracked, you should be able to get it welded up without upseting the balancing very much. What caused it may be that the flywheel needs adjusting on the crankshaft, or that while running and shutting down the engine tried to run backwards ("dieseled") when shut down and this was a weak spot on the flywheel which caused it to crack. Believe it or not, I replaced a clutch on a JD B that was completely out. The clutch disk had broken and doubled up and it caused the plate to crack from the friction and heat and it broke. A replacement one was hard to find, and costed as much as it's weight in gold at the time. I didn't think the welding job would work right, but we got a lot of good service from this tractor until it just quit on us. Still sitting at the farm and never know someday I might try to do a winter project and restore it. Also, make sure that the clutch pulley isn't loose.
