Nothing earth shaking, just idle curiosity. I just bought a 50 A, and it has 2 gas tanks. There's no little lever to switch tanks and it has a gas manifold.I was just wondering why 2 tanks?

I had a 49 model A that had 1 big tank, I now have a 50 model A and it has 2 tanks but it has a valve for switching between the 2. I was told that starting in 1950 JD knew that they were phasing the series out and were just using up old supplies from the all fuel era.

Cedric, it is true that Deere used the dual tank system for a short time in the 1950 model year to boost fuel tank capacity until a larger tank could be designed. I own one of these tractors. The original tanks held 14 gallons and the small tank added another gallon. An 18 gallon tank was put in later. Look to see if your tank has a heat shield under it. If it does, it is one of these tractors. If not, odds are it is an all-fuel. Hope this helps. Mike

Cedric,
I believe this fuel tank arrangement was for all fuel tractors. I have a 1947 JD "A" and it has the two tanks on it you describe.

Cedric not sure if this applies to the 50 "A" but for a short time Deere used the all-fuel tank on the "A" gas tractor to increase fuel capacity & range. I think it might have been earlier than 1950 though, but worth looking into.

It use to have a lever to switch tanks. It's an "All-Fuel" tractor. The small tank held gasoline for starting and heating up the engine. The large tank held the main fuel, such as kerosene. Now, most people just use gasoline and put it in the big tank.
