I have a 1952 John Deere A and want to know how big I can go on tires. I have 14.9's and wondering how much bigger I could get. I want to pull and I would like a bigger tire.
Any info. will be greatly appriciated.

The answer to your question depends on what size rim you have now. If you are running cast wheels with the normal 11 or 12 inch rims you have hit your limit, and maybe then some. If you have pressed steel nine-bolt rims, then you can replace these with how ever wide you want. A 14.9 tire really needs to go on at least a 13 inch rim and 14 doesn't hurt. If you are pulling you could even go a little wider. The factory recommended rim size on a 14.9 is 13 inches. Pullers used to go extremely wide on rims to flatten out the tread, but since mechanical sharpening this isn't as important because the machine will flatten the tread. I do tire sharpening and do this all the time. Hope this helps. Mike

Most slow A's here in TN (pulling the modified classes w/cut tires) 6000-6500 lb. run 16.9 x 38, 7500 lb. and up - 18.4 x 38's.

I just purchased a 1946 A that has 16.9-38's on it and they seem to be OK.. They are comming off next week so I can return it to "normal" size tires for the restore.

If you don't have fenders, I guess you can go as big as you want. I've seen 18.4-34's on old A's and such, but you do run the risk of breaking axles if they have too much bite on them and you're weighted right. I would thing a 15.5-38 would be a good one because it's got a bit lower profile and won't 'roll' as much as you're pulling.

Dave hit it right on the head with a 15-5-38 i work in tire service center for 16 years and that was the willing size most of the farmers used
