Adam,,,,, if she shakes real bad thers a good chance either the flywheel OR the clutch disk is one or more splines off of time. Its probably whichever was removed last, and if the flywheel was never moved, then of course its the clutch disk. There are v marks and dots on the clutch disk/crank so I would check that first. One way to know its in balance, is if the out of weight on the disk is exactly 180 opposite the out of weight on the flywheel. Good luck Ol John T

John T., I've got a 45 JD B electric start with a beat-to-hell flywheel. Someone used a sledgehammer to beat it on the crankshaft and marred the surface something awful. The ring gear is also broken. I found another one in good shape to replace it.

My question is: will the replacement flywheel be balanced with this engine or will I need to have it re-balanced? I understand that the original flywheel and engine were balanced at the factory as a unit.

Thanks for your reply.

Kelly, it doesn't look like John T. got a chance to go back & check his old posts..... In Theory the flywheel, pistons, rods, crankshaft & clutch driver should be re-balanced as an assembly when a new flywheel is installed. In reality hardly anybody ever does. If you don't develop a different or worse vibration after the new flywheel is installed I wouldn't worry about it. Even then you can add stick on wheel weights in different locations & work your way around the clock & run it to evaluate the change in vibration until you get it to run smooth, then remove the same amount of weight from the opposite side by drilling so you can remove the stick on weights.
