I'm looking at a 1974 JD 4230 with Quad-range Trans. Would like your experiences/opinions about this tractor. Mostly will use for light draft use (cultivating, snowblower, maybe some planting) and not any hard pulling(plowing, chiseling). Also, did the later models have heavier plantarys, rear ends, etc. Is this, a major concern? Did earlier models have trouble? Thanks in advance for our help.

I've had 3 4230's and agree with all that has been said. 2 of the three had M&W turbo's and ran 160 hp. We pulled smaller equipment real fast and did not get bigger equipment. In 1976 they beefed up the rear end. Had Problems starting below 70 degrees and used starting fluid. The turbo's had problems with engine cooling. That was the limiting factor. A friend of mine has one and he had new mains installed at 5000 hours as he heard one should do this.

MATT AND EVERYONE ELSE THAT HAS A JOHN DEERE WITH MORE THAN TWO CYLINDERS, ITS NOT THE BATTERY OR STARTER OR COMBINATION OR COMPRESSION, ITS THE HYDRAULIC OIL VALVES IN THE SYSTEM. TRY THIS AND YOU WILL BE AMAZED AT THE DIFFERENCE. AS SOON AS YOU TURN THE KEY TO START THE ENGINE, HAVE YOUR OTHER HAND ON THE STEERING WHEEL AND TURN IT VIGOROUSLY BACK AND FORTH. THIS ALLOWS THE HYDRAULIC OIL TO MOVE OR BYPASS THE VALVES IN THE SYSTEM. THE ENGINE WILL WHIRL AND FIRE RIGHT UP. FROM A 35 YEAR VETERAN FARMER THAT HAS OWNED SEVERAL JD'S. THIS WILL HELP YOUR ATTITUDE AND YOUR POCKET BOOK.

HI, Jim
I have a '76 model. Works great with 6200Hrs and no major work done to it. Keep can of eather handy to start in mornings only. QR Trans is great in my book. I do custon hay work with it. Only problem so far is getting a good battery/starter combo. It seems that JD upped the compression in these models to get better fuel gal. per acre, but this made for hard starts. Book calls for 750amp 6-volt (2). I'm using (2) 1125-amp and still have problems especially hot motor starts. Good luck

Matt, why don't you get a pair of 12 volt batteries and hook them up in parallel.

2 6-volt batteries wired up in series to provide 12 volts will provide more cranking amps than 2 12 volts wired in parellel.

I think u would like the 4230. The quad Range is really nice to drive, and easy to use. Only weak poin I have seen is a general problem with the whole 30 series engines not beng the greatest. A neighbor of mine has a 4230 that they replaced the motor with a 4440 motor(I think), and it has some real power now. This tractor has not had any problems with the rear end eithor, and is used for some real heavy work.

4230 has about the same drivetrain as a 4430 with a lot less hp , so there shouldn't be as much strain on it . Early 44's 73-mid 75 had some final drive problems and from then on they beefed them up some . I'm sure from then on they are pretty reliable . Never had a 4230 but we have a 4430 bought new in '76 never been touched run it at 175hp , it's a Powershift . 4230 was never a powerhouse though , I think an old 4020 had just as much . Around here a 42 sells for as much as a 4430 and it is a lot more tractor . I don't know where you are but if it gets cold none of the '30's start good in the cold , my 4430 never did since new and I always heard the 42's were no better . JIM
