Computer Virus attack

I have gotten a pretty vicious computer virus that I believe may have originated from this location. It is call Badtrans and apparently attacks your email and sends random email to anyone you've ever sent an email too, and attaches the virus to it. Several of my friends have been infected because they unwittingly opened attachments from email they opened in good faith because they recognized my address.
I don't know what I can say to advise you, other than to suggest that at least for awhile you consider not opening any attachments, even if they appear to be from someone you know. This is a nasty virus and has been hard to eliminate.
I wonder what kind of a A$$hole gets his kicks doing something like this?

You wouldn't consider running buck naked through a briar patch. Having a computer, not weekly updating your virus protection & not using a firewall is just as dangerous. I have recieved over 70 virus e-mails at the moment because people are careless.

This happened at work. We were supposed to have NAV running and it somehow missed it, or it wasn't running after all.

The problem with some including the early versions of NAV is they don't screen E-Mails until they have entered your computer. The latest version of NAV that I run does screen incoming E-Mails. Even this doesn't work with some servers as they won't get along with the incoming POP that NAV uses. Unless you are absolutely sure that your anti-virus software is screening your incoming mail you should ALWAYS move your incoming attachments to a safe folder then zap that folder with your anti-virus before even considering opening it...A second thing you should consider is putting a new entry in your address book under "new contact" with !000 for the name & the word VirusAlert as the E-Mail address. That way if a worm does enter your computer & take over your address book as most do it will usually start with the top entry & that would be !000 & try to send it, it can't send it as VirusAlert is not a valid address & will usually hang trying to send that E-Mail so you will be alerted to the fact that your trying to send a worm to all your friends (well ex friends if you do send them worms).

Clooney,
Thanks again (one more time) for the excellent information. This turned out to be a minor inconvenience, that gave me a heads up to prevent worse problems later on. I'll take more precautions from now on. The upsetting part of the whole thing is realizing that there are twisted minds out there that get amusement out of this, and they are walking around with the rest of us. They may be working along side of us, parked in traffic next to us, or sitting next to us in church. I liken them to people who write on bathroom walls, only a little higher tech...not neccesarily smarter, but more technically astute. Nonetheless, it is just one more thing to deal with, and deal with it we will.
Again, thanks for the help.

The badtrans virus (worm) has been around for a while now & any good (up to date) antiviral program will catch it. It usually starts with an underscore in the "from " & has Re: in the subject. Seeing as it commonly uses the same subject it can usually be blocked with a message rule in I.E. Outlook Express but is much harder to block in AOL or other E-mail programs that don't allow subject blocking.
