I don't like the FWA. its not very helpful, and is proned to have numerous problems. The little bit of help is gives the tractor is not worth the rough ride on pavement and hard surfaces... just how I feel bout it.

The front wheel assist units were common on the 4440, etc. when Deere did not offer a true mechanical 4wd (like a truck). The value of assist units is debatable, as some worked reasonably well and some did little to help propel the tractor in wet conditions. We had two 4440's w/ FWA & one was good & one was poor, right off the showroom floor. Many Deere service techs cound not get an adequate handle on setting up the systems, so repair was also dicey. They operate similar to a 'Mud Hog' assembly on a combine, utilizing hydraulic vane rotors to turn the wheels.
