I'm going to pull the head on my 49 B to replace the manifold and studs. While I'm at it I'm going to have the head rebuilt. Something that probably hasn't been done in the 52 years it's been in my family. What parts to I need? I figure it's best to get new valves. Do all four valves have guides? Do the pushrods have guides? Any special seals, gaskets, washers, etc.?

James

James, I had the head on my B rebuilt recently and I took it down to the local NAPA store/shop which is who my JD dealer recommended. They rebuild heads all day long, know what to look for and how to fix it right. I didn't have the time, money or tools to go through the learning curve and do a proper job. They found and fixed some hairline cracks I didn't even know I had. It came back looking like a new head, I don't remember how much it cost.

James I just had my 41 b head redone and the place that did it was who my local John Deere dealer uses to do all their machine work. They replaced the push rod tubes, new valves, springs, guides, milled the head and replaced the manifold studs. They did everything that you could do to one. The cost from the machine shop was $255.00. That price doesn't enclude the cost of parts. I bought the parts from JD. The head really looks like new. I know that is a little expensive, however I wanted it done right and I know that I won't never have to have it done again in my lifetime. I've been from the old school and that is to have every thing done right the first time and you won't have to do it over again. Good Luck!
