John Deere did produce the first scouring steel plow that worked efficiently here in the midwest. His partner at the time was Andrus whose Grand Detour Plow company eventually ended up in the Case Threshing Machine company. John died in 1886 and his son Charles who headed the company afterwards died in 1907 in a Chicago hotel on a business trip. Both passed before Deere bought out Waterloo Tractor in 1918. Deere plows work as good and better than some other brands. Oliver was known as a quality plow along with the Case Grand Detours.

Richard,
Thanks for coming to the defense of the yellow and green. The only other positive comment I was able to gather from my informal poll is that if "the plows were set up correctly, they would do as good a job as any other brand", which I didn't necessarily consider to be a grand testimonial. There were a lot of people that were high on Oliver plows, as you mentioned, and the "Little Genius" got a lot of praise. I have no personal experience, but assumed that any piece of JD equipment would be of high quality, especially a plow, the implement that got the whole thing going.
I posed my question on a generic bulletin board that dealt with farm implements so I thought the answers for the most part would be unbiased. I haven't pursued the topic too much since. Your response has restored my faith (somewhat). Thanks again,
gary

Raye,
From what I understand, he didn't invent the plow, it had been around in some form for a couple thousand years, but he did improve it. His first plow was made from the steel of a saw from a saw mill, and was shaped by bending it over a log. At that time he was partnered with a guy named Andrus I think, and their plow became very popular within a few years. He sold his interest in that company to his partner and started his own company, the Deere Company in Moline. Two ironic things about John Deere: I think he had died before the company produced or even sold their first tractor. The other ironic thing is that many people I talked to that have used John Deere plows in the modern era don't think much of them, most of them prefer another brand.
Anyway, that's the facts as my feeble brain remembers them.

as i understand,no,he didnt invent the plow.what he did was to make the first self scouring plow.up until then the plows would fill up with sticky soil and become useless.
