My 40 A had a balon box on it for 5th and 6th gear. The lower shaft in the trans has no place for a gear just a nut on the end of the shaft. The top shaft has a place for a gear but no gear.I've taken the box off,got a flat cover to put on the left side of trans. The sliding gear top shaft is to long as the bearing will not fit between the snap rings, it will only go on the out side of the outer snap ring.I got the flat cover off an unstilled A was going to cut the shaft off but see no way to hold the shaft in place. The I T book shows two snap rings but my shaft hits the gear on the other side and will not go in far enough.Any input would be appreciaced. BottomD

Went to the J.D. bone yard and got a shaft from unstyled A and it fits just fine. Thank you. BottomD.

The Balon 5-6 gear conversion came with replacement main and counter shafts. It sounds like someone replaced the original counter-shaft but not the main shaft. To use a flat cover in place of the balon box, you'll need to get an original main shaft to replace the long Balon main shaft.
