What is the reason for polarizing; and how do I do it? Thanks.

AWB, the reason a generator is polarized is to magnetize the field shoes in the correct polarity so when the generator starts to charge it produces current in proper direction. A generator can charge either positive or negative ground depending on the shoe polarization at start of charge, after the initial charge starts power is supplied to the field windings in the proper polarity to increase the magnetic strength high enough to produce a strong magnetic field & high generator output...To properly polarize a generator you must know if it is a type A or B to know if you have supply power or ground to the field while jumping power to the armature. On a J.D 6 or 12 volt generator you must ground the (Field) post while momentarily jumping battery voltage to the (Armature) post to polarize it. There are other types of generators especially in the higher voltage ranges but this is the basic 6 & 12 volt car & tractor generator found.

Look in the archives. This has been gone over many, many, times. Also, a factory service manual is very helpful with this sort of thing.
