Looking for Trouble...

Well, since my B has not been starting very easily I've been looking for culprits. I found one, but not all. I was reading some of the back posts about starting and how people have been having trouble. One of the suggestions was to take the air filter cap off that holds the oil. Well this did improve the tractor. It started fairly quickly and sounded like it had a lot more horsepower to it, I also found in the oil another remenant of a wasps' nest. I know that the air filter needs to be cleaned out up there, and I read the article about the mud daubers in the articles, but I don't want to drill out a perfectly good filter, and I assume there is a way to clean that out really well, but how?

Also I tried starting again, and I would hear a sort of blub blub, like it was firing but not catching. I checked the spark on the plugs and it is nice and blue. Any suggestions?

Also electrical wise, my battery isn't charging, I did a search on this site to see what others had to say and couldn't find anything, Any ideas? There also happens to be an apparent short somewhere as my battery drains when the tractor isn't used for a couple of days.

Any help to any of these problems would be much apreciated.

Thanks,

Karl

Karl, if that air cleaner element is plugged as bad as most I have encountered it will be almost impossible to clean out without removing it & drilling the little spot welds out & actually removing the element & soaking it in gasoline or other solvent then steam cleaning it or having it cleaned at a carb shop. (use small pop rivets to re-assemble it) The oil bath + dirt & years of heat turn the element contents into a black concrete like substance that is wire mesh reinforced..... On the starting problem, make sure the choke is closing completely & the little spring loaded door in the choke plate (it your carb has it) is working & actually there....On the battery problem, does you battery discharge if it is disconnected during storage? If so the battery is bad. If not then you have short to ground somewhere either in the cut-out relay or wiring, starter s/w, amp gauge, lights or? To find the short install a voltmeter between the negative battery cable & the battery post (disconnect the cable from the battery) then see what the voltage reads (should be 0 volts or close to it) if the voltage is over .25 volts disconnect things one at a time & see where the short is. Everything must be turned off for this test or it will show as a problem area.

I'm not sure about the wireing on a B, but on mine it was loosing charge at the gauges. If they are old, the insulators may be bad , and ground to the tractor. Just an idea.

Karl A friend once told me he had heard that you clean the oil out of the air cleaner bowl and fill with diesel put it on and run the tractor 20 t0 30 minutes, said this should flush out any dirt or gunk up there.
