Points and condensors..whats up with the new ones

After reading several posts here about problems with the new condesors I decided to look a ours (JD40) since we were having frequent misses. Low and behold the points were burnt and produced the prettiest blue spark you ever did want to see. Long story short put in the old stuff after polishing up the points and got two solid hits every revolution. Does anyone know what they changed and what should be used to replace the old stuff when it breaks? Obviously the newer parts/specs/whatever aren't the same as the older stuff.

KB, the original condensors specification as far as its microfard (capacitance) rating was concerned was matched to the proper value of the coils inductance (henrys) and resistance. Its primary function is to absorb, store and then discharge some of the coils stored primary energy which collapses (discharges across points to ground) when the points open. If its not in the circuit, the points would have to arc too much current when they open and would burn up rapidly. So, the replacement condensor needs to be of the same microfard rating as was desigend for teh coil which may or may not happen wehn you buy one of the shelf. If its ratign is far different from the spec, the points may burn up quickly and the spark energy discharged across the plug gap can be less then maximum. Although many people always install a new condensor when they change points, it is my opinion they usually dont need replaced. Good L:uck Ol John T in Indiana

Maybe somewhere along the road JD has changed the coil specs. and the new condensor doesn't match with the old coil. The same problem often occurs when using jobber parts and not OEM. The jobber coils sometimes draw more current and gives a hotter spark but the OEM condensor can't handle it. Putting a second condensor at the coil will help. Attach to same terminal as ground wire to points and ground condensor to coil bracket.

I know what you're going through with these points and condensors. I have had so much problem with them that I converted all my tractors to the genessee electronic and have not had a single problem. In the past, I've put in brand new JD points and they did not work. Happy Thanksgiving

Is the 40 still 6V From battery through plugs? If not, are you running 12V through a 6V coil? if so try a resistor (12v to 6v) between the switch and the coil. Eather way double check that the battery ground and the coil ground,(the seconardy wire from the coil to the dist is the same.

i had the same problm the last time i put points in the battery changed from 6 to 12 volts and the plugs became 12volt plugs i think the plug wires stayed 6 volt/

KB, you are helping to confirm what I have been suspecting for some time now. What you have found could just be coincidence in the fact you purchased a bad condenser or point set, but I have noticed complaints from others that point in the same direction. I still have the original condensers in my own personal tractors as it is my personal belief that a good working condenser should not be replaced if the point wear is even & there is no pitting or build up on one side or the other. If you get a chance try the new points with the old condenser to see if it is the point set or new condenser that is causing the problem. You could have the Microfarad Capacity of the old & new condenser measured to see if the new & old are different (should be .18-.23 for the good one) . I believe the Delco Remy number of the original condenser is 1869704 , but don't know if it is still available or not. If you do try the new points with the old condenser please E-Mail me with the results, that also goes for anyone else that can confirm they have misfiring with a new condenser that wasn't there before a point & condenser change. One other thing, do you still have the original ignition coil installed or is it a replacment.

We have the original 6V coil installed. I suspect that the new points would work with the old condensor if I cleaned them up since they worked fine when they first were install. They just got prematurely burnt due to the condensor. As far as the replacements we got they came in a JD box from the local dealer. I wouldn't expect to get the wrong thing from them since they should know their own equipment.

I do know one thing for sure ....I am sure glad I found this board otherwise I am sure we would have still been pulling out our hair over this. I would have never considered this as a problem without reading the posts of similar problems on this site..... I have this bad habit of expecting the new parts to be fine.

Thanks All
Have a Happy Thanksgiving!!

After having the same problems you guys are having I tried electronic ignition. The four units I have installed put out enough spark to light up a wet dog.
