In the early 1950's John Deere sold a wire tie hay baler that discharged the bales out the left side . A neighbour had one of these machines. I was 10 or 12 years old at the time. I am trying to locate one of these balers and no one can imagine what they looked like. If someone has a picture, could you post it in the photo album. thank you.

I have a JD 55 wire tie baler that has been shedded its entire life. It is run by a 4 cylinder mounted engine. It is in great condition for its age and still has the dealer stickers on it! If you are still looking I may be willing to sell. Email me at bbergenoh@aol.com.

Hi,
My neighbor has an old JD stationary baler on steel wheels. Looks like it is in good shape. Anyone interested in buying it. The bales come out the rear of the unit. Does anyone know what model this might be?

The link you give does not work. I looked at the eBay listing pictures mentioned elsewhere in this tread, and I've never seen one of these before. My Dad for a short while in the '60s had the NH baler (66?) that rammed the hay through the top of the chamber. He upgraded to a 'new' McCormick-Deering 45 baler, which we still have though it is kaput now.

Hey “47”----- -----

Your aren’t alone. A lot more of us than you are getting on that way.

Just remember, when those balers came along Truman was president, Campanella, DiMaggio, McCarthy, polio and Panmunjom were household words. You could buy a new Chevy for about $1200 and a John Deere A for probably a little less.

You knew your neighbor and he knew every darned thing about you. Where you shopped, where you prayed and where you spit in the back of the barn. If you got sick, he helped you out with the chores. If you were about to get your freshly bailed hay rained on, he and his whole family came running to help you get it in. If you put up a barn he and the whole neighborhood turned out to make a day of it. All this you gladly did for him if needed.

It was 50 years ago, my friend. Now don’t you REALLY feel old? But would you give up those memories to be young again? Thought not! Me either. Have a great Thanksgiving.

Thank you, guys for all the info on these balers. I live in Nova Scotia, Canada and I know there are several of these balers within a 100 miles of my home. They are tucked away in some obscure barn or other farm building. Problem is no one can remember beyond the 14T. I have been sent many goose chases only to find a 14T. Yes, Wheatland this does prove how old we are. It hits home with me everytime I ask about this baler and 99% cant remember what it looks like.

Not long ago Two Cylinder magazine did a couple of articles on JD balers. The second of these featured the portable balers, as we know them today. Mention was made of 114W and 116W balers. It is one of these that you are speaking of. I don’t have the issue handy, but I think there was at least one picture of one of these animals. Maybe you can find this issue. It was within the past few months.

Like you, we had a neighbor that had one and baled for us. I think there’s still some of that baling wire holding something together somewhere around here.

Mike, I have one that is stamped 50W on the tag. It discharges out the left and then has a big curved chute the directs the bale to the rear.

YOU HAVE MY INTEREST!! Is 50W a seral number and if so on what model. The info I have is that in 1936 J.D. put there "hay press" on wheels and a pick-up and a tounge to make it a pull type, it was engine driven. In 1942 they put a p.t.o. drive on there "hay press". In 1946 they came out with there first true "hay baler", the 116-W. The first 3500 built were recalled for tying problems. it could be eather p.t.o. or engine driven. They made 16"x18" bales. In 1953 they came out with the 114-W that made 14"x18" bales. They were both discontinuded when the 14-T came out in 1956. the first "kicker was made for the 14-T in 1958.

Mike, The tag is brass and is configured as follows. The upper left has a W stamped after installed it would appear ( for wire tie ), to the right is John Deere made in the tag. Lower left has 5 followed by 0 (hard to tell on the second number) also stamped after the fact. To the right of that is the serial number looks the same as on tractors.

50W is probably not the serial number. Mine says 53 some thing and then the serial number. It is the year.
