Has anyone had any experience replacing the piston seals and rings on a dual touch-o-matic? Just looking for tips on how to remove the pistons.

Andy, I did a single t-o-m years ago and had not problem getting piston out. I think I squirted a little LOW pressure air, 5 psi should do it, in the inlet hole and out it came. Do not use 100 psi shop air as you will be holding a rocket and that piston will really take off. Same idea holds for doing removal of disc brake caliper pistons. If you haven't yet, take some time and read the shop manual section that deals with the t-o-m. It is very good and will get you thru the job. JD did an excellent job on that part of the manual. It is worth the time to study it. Happy JDing, George Schermerhorn

Andy, once you have the housings dissasembled, the ideal tool is a press. If you don't have one, you can use blocks of wood and a small hyd. jack to remove and reinstall the pistons. I have used the jack underneath the front axle, and placed the housing on blocks on the floor. The seals are made of a leather like material and you will have to be careful installing them or the housing will cut them. You can use thin strips of metal, like a feeler gague between the seals and cylinder to help with installation.

Thanks. As far as I understand then I will need to remove the cylinder heads next to get to the pistons. If this is the case, is it recommended to replace the seals on the heads when reinstalling them?

Yes, the head seals are the ones I was talking about. They have the leather like seal. Yes, you have to remove the heads, there is a ledge in the cyl. wall and the head will only come out from the snap ring side. If you don't get the head seals in proper, this will cause rapid leak down of the lift, even with engine running. There will be a washer and ring together on the piston. The piston and rings are easy to get back into the cylinder--the head is the difficult job, without damaging the seal. I would advise using a hone on the cyl. walls and make sure there are no scratches or damage on the walls. Hope this helps, Wayne in Tn.

Andy, I missinformed you in the above post. You CAN remove the pistons without removing the heads. You can bump the housing on a workbench and the pistons should fall out from the oppisite side of the head. However if the housing shows any sign of oil leaking into it from the head, it would be adviseable to replace the head seals at this time. Sorry, Wayne.
