I'm trying to remove the clutch and pulley on my gas 70. I don't have the correct service manual because Deere no longer prints it. I do have a manual for a 60 but the clutch is quite different. So far I have removed all the disks and facings including the fixed drive disk. Now I figure I have to pull out the clutch fork shaft in order to remove the pulley and the clutch operating sleeve...but I can't get the fork shaft out! There's a one inch round cap on the bottom of the housing...am I supposed to take that off and drive the fork shaft up? What am I missing here? Thanks, Andrus

All of them that I have had out could be done by removing the ring of bolts around the pulley, removing the pin from the rod that fastens to the top of the fork shaft, and the fork would swivel out far enough to disengage the the slot when pulling the pulley out.

Andrus, After removing all the discs, I assume you used jack studs to remove the fixed disc? Then you have to remove the pulley shield and the complete first reduction gear cover. One you have unbolted the whole cover, the entire pulley, shaft, sleeve, and cover will come off. If at this point you only went in this far so that you can replace the bearing, then you are lucky, simply use a punch to drive the bearing and seals out from the back and flip it over and replace it. If like we did, you are in this far to replace the dogs and toggles, then strap in, your in for some fun! If this is the case, find a large three jaw puller, a strong impact wrench, a set of torches, and some PB Blaster. Nothing else can be removed from the back untill the drive gear is pulled off, then the reduction gear cover, operating sleev, dogs, toggles and adjusting bolts can be removed and replaced. Once ya get all that stuff replaced, find a BIG press, I repeat, BIG, and press the drive gear back on.
Good luck, an IT manual is still available, and it does the usual 1/2 assed job of instructing you on this. Clooney and the biys here were much more helpful to me than the IT though. Pete

Pete your making this into a much bigger job than need be the first reduction cover does NOT need to come off to remove the pully. I own 2 70 jds and have had the pullys off both all you need to do is pull the fork assembly off the front of the 1st reduction cover and the pully will come off.

Thanks guys. But Hunter I'm still a little confused. The fork assembly and pulley won't come off...they seem to be firmly held, maybe by the clutch fork shaft which also won't come out.

The clitch shaft wont come out. The clutch shaft and the housing it mounts in all come off as one piece by pulling the 4 bolts that hold it on. The sleeve on the pully will have to be moved towards the engine as far as it will go so the housing and fork including the brake can be pulled straight forward.

Well, I went out this morning to take another look at the tractor, and guess what...there is no housing with 4 bolts...no removeable section at the front of the first reduction gear cover. The first reduction gear cover is all one piece and it totally encloses the clutch shaft. This is a low serial number 70 [7000448] and maybe they changed it at some later point and made a removeable section like on a 50 or 60 or A or B or just about every other tractor Deere made, but I'm quite sure now that Pete is right, I have to remove the whole first reduction gear cover. Thanks.

Andrus, you won't be able to get that shaft out without pulling the 4 bolts & the bearing (oblong cover) as one assembly as there is a snap ring holding it in there. Once the 4 bolts are out the whole bearing (cover) including the fork will slide out to the front. Make sure the clutch is put in the disengaged position before removal.

Andrus, on the 70 (I mis-read your model & was thinking 60) there is no front bearing cover with 4 bolts, you have to remove the (6) 3/8 bolts & (3) 3/8" nuts that hold the seal cover on behind the pulley & remove the cover & pulley together. Sorry for the confusion...Clooney...
