When I tore down my 41-B and took out the fan shaft from the govenor, and then replacing it the repair manual says that the engine has to be a top dead center and the shaft on the end of the govenor has to be horizontal. My question is how critical is it that the end shaft be exactly horizonatal, on mine it would appear that I'm probably one tooth off from being that way. Can the adjustment to get back come from adjusting the timing from the mag? Or do I need to unbutton everything and change the adjustment back one tooth? Any input on this matter would be appreciated. Thanks in advance for your help.
Dan

Clooney is right on with his advice. I'll just add this. Your mag also has an adjustment on the back side using slotted screws. If you time it and the mag is either out of range or just too far foward or back for you liking, then use the adjustment on the back of the mag.

Good Luck...

Jason, if he uses the lag angle ring on the back of the mag to adjust the static timing he will then have the wrong lag angle & therefore the running timing will be way off. That ring must be set to the correct lag angle (usually 25-35*) to insure the correct running timing.

Dan 41B, that mag drive flange slot should be as close to horizontal as possible with the L/H piston at TDC. That being said they don't always line up exactly. Your best bet before tearing it down again is to install the mag & set the timing so the impulse snaps when the LH impulse mark on the flywheel lines up with the case (actually cover) mark at the rear of the flywheel. If it can be timed & still have the mag not at either extreme end of the slot you will be ok, if you cannot set the timing or the mag is at the max travel in either direction it's tear down time again.
