My father-in-law has a +/-1982 JD 2350-no cab with a 175 loader and a home-made log splitter that runs from the rear hydraulics. First of all, I noticed that the PTO shaft always spins even though the plunger in front of the gear shifters is in the disengaged position. Second, the splitter starts chattering (sounds like air in the lines?)after about 30 min. of working time. Then the loader doesn't always work properly and the three point hitch where the splitter is mounted, seems to drop each time the hydraulic ram is run in and out. We have changed the hydraulic fluid, filter and cleaned the sump screen but none of this has helped. Has anyone had similar problems?

Are you using a hydraulic valve on the log splitter?`If you are is it a closed center valve? If it is an open center valve you are heating up the oil, and starving the pump this would explain the pto turning and the loader chattering.Deere uses closed center hydraulics on all of its tractors since the 10 series. Try turning the remote off wait about 15 seconds and see if the hydraulics wake up. If so the problem is in the log splitter and not the tractor.

is your loader hooked up right ..do you have return from remotes going back into filter cover?
the loader return needs to go in filter cover..using the spilter the remotes need to return to filter cover..your trans pump when was new pumps about 9 to 11 gals per minute..your front pump pumps more than that even with small pump..the excess fluid that is pumped to front pump would return to rear end through the cooler..if front pump uses more than trans pump can pump the fluid get real hot and thins out a lot...put return going back into filter cover and it cuts down the amount need for front pump so trans pump can return cooler fluid to rear of tractor..i hooked up a 2840 with seperate lines coming off of filter cover and high pressure lines,,i put a high pressure ball valve on high pressure line and used quick conectors on each line..put valve on spilter..works good..also u might have internal leak like the post below said..most use low presure to operate them, which comes from trans pump..... .if i can help e-mail me ...have nice day

Try working tractor\Hyds. with PTO engaged. If Hyds. work ok, you have a leak in PTO brake circut.
