80 Cracking Pistons

I bought a model 80 many years ago. While changing the oil initially, I found some pieces of what appeared to be a piston covering the drain hole. After tearing it apart I found that one piston had the skirt broken off even with the oil ring, so I replaced both pistons with used set from another 80. Since then it has done quite a bit of work, and always run perfect. This spring it started smoking terribly and using oil, and lots of it. I found another piece of piston in the bottom of the crankcase so I guess this is a recurring problem. My question is, does anyone have any ideas as to why the pistons keep cracking the skirts off them? It has always been treated right, warmed up properly before work, no starting fluid, cooled down beofre shutting it off, etc. Aside from a bad design in pistons, I'm at a loss. Any help is appreciated.

If you're ever into the crankcase again soon, make sure to check where the oil ring stops when a piston is all the way back of what they call RDC. Has the block ever been sleeved? When your pistons get hot (especially aluminum) they expand. It is possible that they expanded so much that the oil control ring went past the end of the block or sleeve, which ever you got. When the piston comes foward again it snaps the skirt right off above the oil ring groove. Yes, also check the crank throw clearance to the bottom of the piston. Jason

I have heard of this happening before. It could be hitting the crank throw at bottom center if crank bearings are severely worn.
