I am wondering if anyone else has broke a rocker valve housing on a recent john deere machine? I was clearing a lot of "palmetto's" and light shrubs, I backed up into a sand embankment with a few small shrubs on it, when the box blade made contact, the whole top and back of the rockervalve housing broke off, " where the upper pivot, control arm attaches" or 3 point hieght adjuster. I am utterly amazed! I would have never thought this would break, especially under these circumstances. It broke at the casting where the hydraulic fill cap is, it broke all the way down to the transmission. I have actually had several problems with this machine and am getting frustrated. Any info would be greatly apreciated. Thanks, Butch

One of the members in my tractor club advised me that his 4200 housing broke while using a bushog. I'm concerned as I have a 4400 but have not had this problem. Had the front axle problem and dealer replaced. I looked at the housing after hearing of my friend's problem and it appears the whole housing has to be replaced.

Thats what you get when you use a lawnmower for a bulldozer.

Come on, give me a break! If a 4300 hydro. 4 wheel drive can't clear a small lot of shrubs, it shouldn't be in production. Since the original post, I reinspected the damage. Where the housing cracked, the cast looks really cheap, its very porous and not a hard cast, looks like one of those cheap, made in china "cast replicas" when you break it. This part of this machine, or any machine, should be virtually indestuctable. In the event one breaks, I would be inclined to believe that it is either defective, or a design flaw which I guess would fall under the same category. My personal belief now, is that the loose molded cast is/was further weakened by the location of the hydraulic fill hole, keep in mind, that the bottom of the housing ends at the transmission case, and is also a gasket mating surface with no fastners in close relation to the stress point. No one could hurt my feelings by poking fun at this machine, it has less than a hundred hours and has been in the shop 5 times, and they neglected some of the requested repairs, saying they could not locate the problem. This is my second JD, the first had as many problems, even more!! Was this thing made in mexico? I heard, JD was manufacturing some of these units in Mexico now, and that the steel used to make certain parts is below American standards?? Any truth to this statement??

Deere is assembling tractors in Mexico, the are the advantage series, the 05 and 03. The 4000's are a compact tractor, used for light duty and mostly pulling finishing mowers and such. I have replaced several rockshaft covers at the dealer, and 99% of the time the were trying to overwork the capacity of the tractor. Not saying that you were doing that, but people need to realize that you cannot expect big results from small equipment. Good luck

The rockshaft housing on this tractor or most other tractors for thatn matter are designed to take the force caused by the lifting of an implement ie. a downward force toward the trans. housing. When you are backing up and the load lifts the blade as to the limit of hitch travel either the back wheel will lift off the ground or something is going to break. once again you are using a glorified lawn mower for a bulldozer. Do yourself a favor go rent or buy a skid loader to do your"clearing work" Use the 4300 for what it was made for, mowing the lawn.
