Went to the junk yard today and got a replacement rear axle for my A same spline count but when I got it home I found that the new one is 2" longer. The bull gear end is the same but the other end where the bearing is dosn't match. This is a 1940.Do they have an odd axle? They told me that all older A's are the same, not so.Can any one help me out on this. Thanks BottomD.

BottomD, there was an axle change at s/n 488,000 or the start of the 40 model year & at 584,000 or the middle of the 47 model year....s/n 487,999 & prior used axle # AA935R & s/n 488,000-583,999 used axle # AA2243R & s/n 584,000 up used axle # AA5581R. The AA2243R would sub to AA5581R so they will apparently interchange. The AA5581R was also listed as a heavy duty.

I could not find any #,s on either axle. My ser#is 490500. Now in my IT manual the D axle, looks just like mine because of the outer spacer next the felt seal then felt retainer then bearing. This all comes off the axle toward the bull gear it can not come off the outside end. The new axle has a 3/8 wide bearing stopper that my old axle dose not have.Where do I look for the number on the axle? thanks BottomD

BottomD, I doubt you will find any numbers on the axle shafts. Your best bet is to take your old axle shaft with you when you go look at shafts.
