My 47 A really steers hard. I opened the steering box up front and it is full of black grease. What now?

DJ : I wish I had a reasonable solution for you.
If you have watched some of the posts, pappyJDA
and I have tried replacing the sector gear (new)
and bearings without much sucess. I put a 4-spoke
(steering wheel)on, which is 19" dia (bigger than
the 3-spoke 17") and superslicked the worm gear
and sector gear. I even backed off the adjustment
(concentric cone bushing)allowing for just a little front wheel shimmy. It's a lot better, but
still no walk in the park to steer, especially
with the front mtd cultivators. This winter, I'm
going to pull the steering rod with the worm gear
and send it to a machine shop and have them
milled together. It'll be expensive, but it's for my Dad (73) and I'll do what ever it takes for him
Don't know how much longer he'll be around.
The only other possibility is a power steering
add on. I don't particularly like the looks of
them and I think it detracts from the restoration
of the tractor, but whatever it takes.... Rick

Thanks Rick. I'm not as strong as I was, either! I'll figure out something. DJ
