I have found a 4020(69 model) which is in good condition except, the clutch is weak on the tractor. Current owner believes that the clutch(tractor is not a power shift)should be replaced. What type of cost am I looking at to do this and since the tractor is split, is their anything else that should be done while we have the tractor apart. I can buy this tractor for 6,500 which I believe is a good buy if the clutch repair bill isn't to big.

Thanks in advance

each individual part of the clutch is available from deere.possibly all you need to replace are the springs and disks.maybe only the clutch disk, not the pto disk.the throw out bearings are cheaper from deere than from napa.splitting the tractor and reassemble should take less than 6 hours @ 35.00 per plus parts, flywheel facing etc.an IT manual explains it all

HY-CAPACITY is another good source for re-man clutch assemblies. 1 800 247-1824 for nearest dealer.

And while you've got it apart, do yourself a favor and have the flywheel faced if necessary and put a new rear main seal in it---invariably, if you don't, it (the seal) will start to leak, and ruin all your other work.

I just had one done for an old model 4020. A clutch rebuilder shop charged 456.35 for a rebuilt pto and drive clutch plate, rebuilt pressure plate, new release bearing and pilot bearing, and refacing the flywheel. In my 30 years experense on 4020`s, if the clutch plate is worn out, enough heat has been generated to weaken the springs on the pressure plate. If you do not renew them at the same time, your new clutch plate will not last long. You will be money ahead to do the whole job while you are at it. I also carried the new assemble to my dealer and got them to adjust the clutches before I installed them. Hope this helps. Lloyd

If it just needs a clutch disk they are around $90 at a JD dealer.

If you are going to go to the trouble of splitting the tractor put in a rebuilt clutch assy. They are available from Deere (not cheap) or A&I Products (reasonable and good quality) An I&T manual will take you thru the job easily if you have some mechanical expertise. Parts cost about 650+/_.

Also it could just be out of adjustment. It should have 3/8" free travel. The clutch can easily be adjusted at the clutch pedal just loosten two bolts; pretty much self explanatory. You will need to get a guage to set the levers on the clutch if you put in a new disk. I think JD offers a heavy duty metallic disk; don't get it, you're asking for trouble down the road.

John, the 3/8" dimension on the clutch free travel is the MINIMUM that the pedal should have. Suggested free travel is 1 1/2". Hope this helps. Mike
