First reduction gear lubrication?

Was wondering...

On a 1946 "A"

What oil lubricates the first reduction gear and where does it come from? Also, how does the bearing outside the first reduction gear get oiled, or is it supposed to be packed w/grease? There is a removeable cover on this bearing, so I suspect it may be greased, but don't know...

There is a drain under the crankshaft which I assume is to let engine oil back into the crankcase after it lubricates the right main bearing, although I don't see how this would let oil lubricate either the first reduction gear or the gear on the clutch. I would suspect that there should be transmission oil lubricating the first red. gear, but since this gear meshes with the gear on the clutch, it would seem that this would let transmission oil slowly drip into the crankcase! To make it all the more confusing, the parts manual shows a filler plug on the first reduction gear cover, yet there is no such filler on my tractor. In fact, the only plug that looks capable of accepting transmission oil is a plug on the powerlift.

I can see no way that transmission oil could make it into the first reduction gear cover.

Help!

chris

Chris, on the older J.D.s like your "A" the 1st reduction gears are oiled with engine oil from the R/H main bearing as it has no seal between it & the 1st reduction cover, there is a little well at the bottom of the big 1st reduction gear that holds a little oil so there is always enough to be thrown around by the big gear. The outer 1st reduction gear bearing in the cover gets oiled with the same engine oil but sometimes that is a little lacking at low RPM so some farmers added a grease fitting to the little cover if the tractor was used at low RPM as a cultivating tractor. On some tractors there was a little drain plug at the lower back corner of the 1st reduction cover to drain that little well under the big gear. The later tractors had a second oil filler on the back of the 1st reduction cover to add a little extra oil to the 1st reduction cover at oil change time, but that was mostly on the numbered series that used transmission oil in the 1st reduction cover. Because engine oil is used to lubricate the 1st reduction gears, engine oil that is heavy enough to be carried by the gears is an important consideration in choosing an acceptable engine lubricating oil & one of the reasons I personally use 30W oil in my pre numbered series tractors.

There is a hole in the right front of the trans that catches the oil from the top gears and it goes to the first reduction gear bearing. The out side bearing is packed and gets no oil from the trans.
