Ok fellas, here's one for ya. I've got a 1950 Styled AR S/N 276028. The tractor runs, but knocks so bad that it sounds like an R. The noise seems to be localized to the clutch. I can engage the clutch and if I turn the engine over by hand fast enough (using the pulley), something inside catches up and bumps the pulley as I stop turning. The noise is there when you turn the engine over with the starter too. I've had the clutch apart and everything seemed alright inside. The drive disk was VERY tight on the crankshaft. So I'm not sure where the noise is coming from. A bad rod bearing? Maybe, but when the tractor runs the knock is only felt near the pulley and not in the block. Tell me what you guys think. Thanks.

Zack

Zack, the first thing to check would be the flywheel, if it is loose the knock will usually be heard from the clutch side. If that is ok then pull the crankcase cove & check the rod & main bearings. The bump you hear when turning it from the clutch could be the 1st reduction gear or trans input shaft/gears feeding back through the clutch drive gear on over-run due to normal backlash or the PTO gear set if it is engaged. The cam to crank backlash can also be felt on older tractors with some wear on them.
