I hate to ask such a simple question, but this has me stumped, and I don't have the manual yet, but will get one next weekend... but .....

I have a 42 handstart B (that I love by the way), and the water pipe is rusted out. I thought it would be easy to just remove the 4 bolts that hold it on, but it has studs, and I can't lift the pipe off the studs because the fan shaft is right above it. Tried removing the fan shaft but doesn't want to come off... Can anyone help me?

why don't you check your parts manual. I believe the tractor was suppossed to have bolts not the studs, all the later models have bolts. If someone has put the studs in, you could remove the studs and go back to bolts. I'd rather do this than mess with all the governor and fan shaft.

S/N 201000 and below, had studs, and the manual says to loosen the govenor shaft at the rear and front to provide(maybe) enough clearance. The best way is as Chris says take everything off including the radiator, hood, gas tank, fanshaft. Russ

Chuck,
I have a 44 B and recently tried to get a new pipe and the local dealer wanted $275 for a new one. I took the old pipe to a muffler shop and they made one with the bends and it works great.

If Russ's advice doesn't get you out of the jam, you'll have to do it the correct (hard) way. Remove (or at least lift) the entire governor/fanshaft assembly, then the water pipe will come right off. When you remove the governor, try to save the gasket under it, since deere does not make these anymore (you can take it off, clean the mating surfaces and just use silicone if the gasket can't be saved).

It's going to be hard to tip the fanshaft up since the fanshaft is a very tight fit in the governor housing. And if you do manage to get the fanshaft and fan assy. off the governor (you'll probably have to remove the radiator to do this), be sure to re-use the gaskets that were on the fanshaft when you took it apart. These "gaskets" are actually spacers that govern the fan/governor pinion mesh.

With a little luck, take the 2 bolts out that hold the fan in the front and sometimes that will give you enough clearance to lift out the water pipe. The fan probably will not come out without at least moving the radiator fwd. After removing the casting and pipe, then use a big torch to unbraze the pipe from the casting. Russ
