14T Baler Dummy

I am working on a 14T JD baler. The baler was owned by somebody else and sat for 3 years outside. My cousin decided to convert some big round straw bales into small squares. On the first bale, something happened in the chamber and the plunger broke both needles about 6 inches from the top. Does anybody know what is going on? I know nothing about square balers. We were very conservative on the amount of straw we were feeding it.

If the bailer is out of "time", it will break the needles. But if the needles did not return to the full back position, due to some rusted parts not moving properly, hay pressure on the needles may cause them to break 6 inches from the top. I have had needles bend, or break further down the needle that. Get a manual, and make sure all the parts move through their full travel. The straw wasnt wet was it? If the bailer was working properly, I dont think even a heavier load of DRY straw would have broken the needles. Good luck

I have used a 14T that I bought new in '64,still working. My bet is that due to rust and weather the needles were not in the home position and the safety dog in the bottom of the chamber did not come up to stop the plunger. Did you run the baler through baling cycles by hand first? The 14T is very reliable but the BIG shed is hard on even the best equipment
