ok guys, i have a chance to buy either a 2950 or 4040 both for 22,000$ they both have cabs but the 4040 hasnt been used since late 99 or early 2000. it needs a new a/c pump and new cab interior. batteries are down and needs new tires. the guy said he would take $22,000 if he done the work less if i doen it. on the 2950 the guy wants $22,000 has cab and gets tyhe cab kit too. starts right up and has new rubber all around. had new clutch put in this past spring....all its done since hes had it was brush hog and plow/disk 20 acers. the 4040 is a 1978 and the 2950 is a 1984 model. could you tell me the types of trannies for them? and if the 2950 was a very reliable tractor? on the trannies i know that in the 4040 they have a quad-range syncrange powershift and partial powershift but dont know much about the 2950. on the casing of the tranny of the 2950 there is a rod that goes into the side there looks like it cokmes outta the cab? could it be the parking break maybe? the 4040 has park and the 2950 has break. what i want to know is which is the better tractor for that price? later on i would like to get a loader to put on the one i get. but if i buy it a loader is outta the question. im buying out right from an individual too if that makes a diff. he has both tractors siting in front of his dariy suply shop..... thanks for the help in advance guys.

thanks for the help guys.....the guy is giveing me the chance ot take both out in to the field and use. what would it cost to have the cab kit a/c pump and new tires on rear done? if not more tehn $1000 i would buy the tractor for 19,000. is this a reasonable price for it in the condition its in?i found out the hours btw...the 2950 has 5300 hours and the 4040 has 5004.89hrs. the guy that has the 4040 bought it new so he knows what it needs and how hard its been used. they both come w/ the 540-1000rpm PTO's. the 4040 looks like a good tractor wouldnt hurt to have new paint tho. i think ai have rattled on enough about it guys. again i thank you for the help.

John: I had a 2950, I bought it new and only kept it for two years. I bought it so I could retire my 730D. It was nice tractor, but is was hard starting in the winter, it was fuel hungry and if but back to back with my 730D I think 730 would take it. It would be close, but I was very disappointed in it's performance in the field and fuel consumption. It would burn almost twice what the 730 would burn per acre. I traded it on a new 4050 and it was the right move. The turbo 4050 with the 359 motor has been an excellent tractor. Outstanding fuel consumption, starts in the winter with no problems, and is just a lot more tractor than the 2950. Take the 4040 you will not be disappointed.

John, the 2950 is a good tractor but I will take a Waterloo tractor (which the 4040 is) over a Mannheim tractor any day. The 4040 also has more horsepower. The Waterloo design is a better design in my opinion. No contest in my opinion, but others opinions may vary. Mike
