I just painted my JD 320 and it looks real good. When I reassembled it I noticed that the muffler is real close to the hood on the back side and I'm worried that the heat from the muffler will ruin the paint. (It's oil based enamel) Should I be concerned about this? I don't want to have to paint it over again.
Thanks, Paul

If this is just a 'parade' tractor, it'll be OK. If you work it, it'll scorch because the muffler gets a dull red under continous full load.

One solution is to get the extension pipe for the oval muffler option (about $40 at deere) which brings the pipe some 4" above the hood, and then put the muffler on the extension

Thank you! The problem is that I haven't been able to get the old muffler off. After the bolts are removed, how does it come apart?
Thanks, Paul

First, you decide that you are going to REPLACE the muffler.
1. Remove the hood, and the heat shield.
2. Use a SAWZALL with a 5" blade to cut the muffler pipe into about 1/4" above the manifold.
3. With a punch, or cold chisel, drive the muffler pipe into the center of the pipe.
4. As soon as it collapses a little, you can pick out the cut-off piece with your fingers.
5. Install a new muff

Might add, don't let pieces of metal fall down into the engine. You'll hear it real quick when you start it up.
