I had my 1949 JD A idling in the driveway the other night while I was tinkering with it. The clutch wasn't engadged and when I got on it to go it wouldn't snap in. It will go if you hold the handle in but the clutch won't snap. I have adjusted the clutches and clutch linkage many times trying to get it to work. I have also had the whole pulley and throwout bearing off. Nothing seems to be broken. What could be wrong?

johndeereaandb, without seeing & actually feeling it, it is hard to isolate the problem. The usual cause of "not snapping in" is worn toggles & dogs (pivots) but a worn operating sleeve, miss-assembled clutch, bent fork, fatigued fork shaft, fork shaft hitting the 1st reduction housing, to name a few can also cause the problem. Will it snap in if you back the adjustment off a nut flat or two? Can you feel the operating sleeve move the toggles over center but it just won't stay there? Does it start to pull but it just wont go over center? Does the lever have kind of a notchy feel as it tries to engage? Try to explain how it feels as you try to engage it.
