420 loses power

I made the mistake of loaning my 420 IC to a neighbor. Grrrrr ... when I finally got it back, it refused to do any work. It purrs like a kitten at idle (if I run it at half choke) As soon as I put any load on it, the engine speed slows to nothingness. I've had the carb rebuilt, replaced the manifold gasket, adjusted the governor, replaced the points, wires and plugs and checked the timing.
At first I thought I had a vacuum leak (because it ran on 1/2 choke) but I can't locate any leakage. A friend suggested that maybe the timing chain jumped a tooth... I'd rather not start tearing into the engine, so I'd appreciate ANY suggestions of where to look for a solution to my problem... before I resort to major surgery. Thanks!

Bill, it sounds like a fuel starvation problem. Make sure it has a continuos flow of fuel to the carb at all times. Pull the drain plug from the bottom of the carb & make sure you have a 1/4" diameter stream of fuel for AT LEAST 30 seconds, if not find out why. There is an inlet strainer in the elbow at the carb that the fuel line attaches to & if it is plugged will cause a problem like yours

Thank you Clooney... there is a very good flow from the bowl drain which continued beyond the 30 seconds, so I guess that is a miss. Maybe I need to start at another point and see if the power problem is corrected in the process... As I said before, my 420 purrs at idle IF I am running at about 1/2 choke. When the choke is opened Charlie backfires a bit and dies. I am trying to come up with a compression tester to see if I have a stuck valve. If this were a 56 Chev, I might have a clue but I'm lost with this system. Do you have any more suggestions of what to check?
Thanks!
P.S. Am I in trouble for putting the link to my non-tractor homepage on here?

Bill, a failing ignition coil can also cause a power problem like yours, but because the choke has an effect on the power it still sounds like a fuel problem. If you have good fuel flow to the carb then it still could be a plugged passage inside the carb. Does the load needle have an effect on the engine running & power? If it doesn't change anything that would point to a plugged passage. Can you borrow a carb from another tractor for a test? Those TSX carbs dont seem to have rust problem in the internal passages that the DLTXs do but do seem prone to dirt in the passages. Manifold leaks, & vacuum leaks effect idle more than high load as the vacuum is much higher at idle & the total volume of air flow is lower so I dont think you have an external leak, now if you are leaking exhaust into the intake under load things are different & the choke would have some effect on that. It probably wouldnt hurt to make sure the ignition point gap is at the max as the worn distributor bushings will have quite an effect on running if the point gap is on the low side, but then again the choke would have little effect on that. Sticking valves usually effect idle as well as higher speeds & if it is idling OK your valves aren't sticking at idle so a compression test won't show anything (unless you can find a way to run a compression test at 1000+ RPMS).

It's a long shot but try draining & flushing the entire fuel system. Who knows what old goo that used to be gas your neighbour had sitting in the shed for 20 years .
