My 70 4020 looses rpms when I'm picking corn. The engine seams to run out of feul, then speeds up as if feul is resupplied or the throttle lever is opened up. Other times this has happened, I replaced the feul pump and the problem disappears, but this time there was no change. Did I get a bad feul pump or is something else the matter? It also seems to be funny that a feul pump needs to be replaced every two years. (or about 400 hours, for me.)

Did you check the fuel return line on the injector pump? I don't know if it is applicable to your 4020 for the newer models but it was a problem on my 1965 3020. The washer retainer ring in the govornor wore out and disentegrated which caused the check valve to plug up with crud. This was causeing low rpm's and bursts of power as you described. I cleaned the check valve and it ran like a champ! Hope this might be of help to you and good luck!

chcek the flow out of the fuel return line at the tank. partly clogged return line creates higher pressure whithin the pump thus changing injection timing out of specs resulting in poor engine operation. david

Had this happen to my 4020 Diesel last year. It would also run rough at higher engine speeds because of the lack of fuel it was getting through the clogged filters. At first i thought it was a problem with the injectors, but all i needed to do was change the fuel filter. It is also a good idea to have a filter put on your fuel storage tank as it helps keep the amout of crud that gets int the tractor tank to a minimum. Hope it helps.

The feul filters have less than 100 hours on them and when I crack the line and pump it by hand, there is no shortage of fuel. But I am going to trade caps with my 3020 or 4320 to see if that makes a differance. Or maybe I'll run it, and when it acts up, I'll pop the cap. But the more I think about it, the more I think that my injector pump is bypassing the feul instead of building up the nessessary pressure. I've been told that the CBC pump had some problems.

It could be the injector pump, or the injectors. The only reason I figured it would be the filters is tat when it happened to me I ran the tractor out of fuel, and the filters plugged with all the crud in the tank within 15 hours of use to the point where the only time the tractor would run was when it was idleing. I would try changing the filters again, just to be 100% sure that it wasn't a very CHEAP simple fix, and if it is not the filters I would then check the injector pump, or injectors. good luck

SOUNDS LIKE THE FUEL FILTERS ARE PLUGGED,THIS WILL CAUSE THE SIMPTOMS YOU DESCRIBE. ALSO HAVE YOU REPLACED THE FUEL CAP? THE PRE 69 FUEL TANKS HAD A VENT TUBE AND THE CAPS DID NOT VENT . THE 69 AND NEWER HAVE VENTED CAPS.HOPE THIS HELPS, DON
