I have a 20 year old 317. At about 3/4 throttle, it makes a severe vibrating noise - sounds like it is coming fromt he transaxle. It does this at any speed - even sitting still. I expected to find a plate or something loose, but no such luck. I fear it's engine or transmission.

Anyone seen anything like this?

Also, there is a clear tube at the rear of the transaxle that appears to be there to view the fluid level. Is that what it's for? If so, what kind of fluid should I use, and how do I check the level. Could that be the reason for the noise?

It could be the engine for sure... Yeah engine always had real problems. I had repaired the engine 4 times till I just buy a new one with a oil filter on it and it has last 5-6 years now. there is a clear tube at the rear of the transaxle that appears to be there to view the fluid level..... Yes that's what it's for, you could get oil from JD it should be Red.. anyway it's nice mower starting to fall apart need to keep up more.. I have tiller, snowblower and mower with it.

It's probably the engine they were known for
seriuos problems I'm surprised it lasted that
long.JD replaced a lot of the 317 engines.The
local JD shop replaced the engine on every 317
they traded in,even if it was running ok.

The engine was replaced several years ago. Hopefully it isn't that. I'll check to see what kind it has now.

As for that tube, how do I check the level? Engine running, after warm, what? What kind of fluid does it use? Do I have to get it from JD, or is it a common type?

for the Tube the oil in there should show half of the tube then it's fine, if it show no oil in the tube, then need go to JD and tell them Hydraulic for 317 lawn tractor they should know from book.. it comes in small can, if your Hydraulic is not working right maybe need to change the filter under the tractor. any problems let me know I have a 317 rebild book,

the vibration you are talking about is not engine ,it is the shaft ends that the drive shaft connect to ....they are worn if you check them closely
also the u joints need to be lubed by soaking them in a can of oil as they are the none grease able joints....I had a 317.... checked hydro shaft and it was worn big time shaft cost like 300 so.. with out labour hope this helps ya

The clear tube is to view the hydraulic fluid level. Also, if you check the sheet metal shroud around the engine cylinder while it is running, you may find a source for the noise. You can bend the sheet metal away from the engine if it is touching it.
