I am wanting a hotter spark in a model A JD. I have a high voltage coil. My question is: I have heard that by increasing the points gap in the distributor, a hotter spark will result. Is this so? The standard points gap is .015-.020. How much should I open the gap?

Go to your local automotive store and get plugs 2 numbers hotter than what is recommended. This works well in Nebr where it gets cold in the winter. This has always worked for me.

As far as I know changing the point gap will do nothing to alter coil output voltage but it will advance your timing so be careful with that.

Increasing the points gap will decrease the spark intensity. The dwell time would be decreased. Use the least points gap with which the tractor runs well. This will require frequent adjustment of the points as wear on the rubbing block decreases the point gap. For those wanting minimal maintenance, when installing new points, use the largest point gap recommended by the tractor manufacturer. This maximizes the running time before adjustment is needed.
