Pictured on the link below is my 1969 105 combine with 404 diesel engine and hydro drive. I bought it 5 years ago from the original owner and it now has 4200 hrs. I updated it to a QT throat so now I have a 444 corn head and 216 flex head for soybeans. These newer heads run so much easier and do a better job of harvesting. The first photo on the link is of unloading ear corn using a 1948 M JD that my father bought new, the second is of the 105.

Dave, I'd be interested to know how you are running the reel on the 216, since 105 combines did not have a provision for running a hydrostatic motor for the reel drive. I'm with you, I think the 105 was one of the best combines JD ever built!

Good question. I had the same question when I was going to do this. I talked to some neighbors and they said the Oliver and White combine heads had a self contained hyd. unit to run the reel. So I located one and mounted the unit on the back side of the head and run a roller chain down to the cross shaft. The unit has a electronic control to run the speed so I just ran a wire to a self centering switch in the cab and it works perfect.

Thanks---just wondered how you did it. Some years ago,I made about 300 hydraulic units for JD 200 series platforms so they could be used on combines without hydrostatic reel drives. Until I quit farming in 1988, I ran 95 and 105 combines, and learned quite a few tricks to make them work better, and have more capacity. My e-mail address is: [email protected], I'd be glad to chat with you anytime about these great old machines.

My 105 has the 404 cu. in. diesel engine, the same as in the 4020 tractors.

Great pictures, but what is that long silver-colored machine that goes from the ground to the top of the crib? Is that some new invention that maybe replaced the scoop shovel? I had always thought that the aluminum scoop shovel was such an improvement that it could never be replaced.

LOL!!
