Help, removing differential from late B.

It appears that I will need to split the main case from the rearend in order to get the differential out to replace the bearings. Is this correct? I can't get my bearing puller through the case to pull off the bearings, and I don't want to try getting them off by hammering a chisel between the race and gear, so splitting looks like my only option. The rollers and inside races don't appear to be too bad, so I suppose I could avoid a lot of trouble by just replacing the outside races, but the PTO shaft bushing is also worn pretty bad, and this will be a mowing tractor, so I guess I'll do what it takes to fix it right. Can you believe I started out just replacing the clutch disks, and now I'm clear in the bottom of the transmission replacing rotted bearings.

Bob: some folks mark the teeth and put the gears back in the same position. They say that thrust creates wear in certain areas and replacing in a new area could lead to some noise, probably more so on the spinning gears, but a thought for you. I marked or timed the bull gears when I replaced them on the 530.

Bob: I've had several of these tractors and have never replaced the differential bearings. These are low speed running in oil. There are shims under one of the caps and you can tighten them. Are you overlooking tuning up these areas. Now is the the lower shaft bearing is too warn then removing shims want tighten but I be surprised that the differential bearing would be like this. You better have a stiff pocketbook if you buy those big bearing. I burned $150 on bearing and races for a lower shaft on a 530 so I know the large bearings are pricy and those will have to be pressed on. Sounds like you may be overkill in your tear down. These old tractors will run good with all kind of slop on clearances. As a matter of fact most them got somewhat loose are a few years of hard pulling.

Chuck, thanks for the reply. I may just replace the outer races, since they are pretty chewed up and pitted, but the rollers and inner races look quite a bit better. One of the primary reasons I need to get the differential out is to R&R the PTO shaft bushing which is directly inder the differential. I have tried everything I know to get the clip off the back of the PTO shaft, and have not had any luck. So I've resigned myself to separating the case from the rear. I've got everything supported and braced, and will probably split it open this evening.

Bob: Be sure to support the tractor good...I just worked on my 530 this way and made a heavy support frame. Those things can topple over when you separate them. Good luck.

Point is as asked in post, which was "Is this correct?". In other words, am I overlooking another way to get this assembly out without splitting the case from the rear end.
