I have a 4010 John Deer 24 VDC tractor I would like to replace the generator with a 24 VDC alternator. Do you have any recommendation? Can a Delco 10SI 12 VDC alternator be converted to output 24 VDC by replacing the internal regulator with an internal or external 24 VDC regulator?

John.
I have a 4020, I use it every day .It was a 24 volt sym. It was the pits. you couldnt run very long with the lights on and had to make sure the draw was the same on both batters and needed two chargers to charge the batteries. so I simpley removed the old 24volt gen, installed delco 12volt alt, changed two wires.Installed a 12 volt starter "which is off a 750massey combined" hooked my two batteries pos to pos &neg to neg .And I have a totaly different tractor.I paid $250.00 can. for a used starter and $75.00 for a new 50 amp alt.the best money I ever spent on my farm

No, it can't be done by simply changing the regulator, that is if you want to keep the split load light and accessory system and not do a lot of botched up wireing. There are after market 24 volt delco isolated ground alternators available that are positive ground (ground not to be confused with the frame of the tractor) this means all you have to do is remove existing regulator and hook the brown wire to the positive post or alt. and the blue wire to the neg. post of alt. They cost about $200 but really work well. Any good alternator shop should be able to supply them. 5020 tractors used a 24 volt alt. that will work, also expensive.

Jon, Im no wizard on the 24 volt systems you need to ask Dave Wickman (WTW) about that but I do agree with my friend clooney and have also never seen any 24 volt conversion kits for the Delco SI-10. My undestandign is that either a 24 volt generator or alternator is a two wire output unit at 24 volts that goes across the 24 volt battery bank. The batteries are tied to the tractors frame at their mid point so that some 12 volt loads are fed from one battery (pos grnd) and otehrs by the other one (neg grnd), with the starter being a two wire (not electrically connected to frame) 24 volt unit. If you find a two wire 24 volt alternator, I dont think theres much else you have to do because it simply (after being rectified) does the same as the generator. Good Luck Ol John T

Jon, I'm not sure if the Delco 10 SI can be converted to 24 volt. I haven't seen any parts to do so but do have 24 volt high limit voltage regulator specifications for the Delco 10 SI so someone at one time anticipated there would be one. Delco does make a 20 SI, 25 SI & 30 SI in 24 volt.
