Hi,
I have a 1968 3020 gas tractor. While working in the woods, a branch snagged the 1/4 inch line feeding the posi trac and broke it. After we fixed it and replaced the oil that was lost, the hydraulic system does not work properly. We have drained the fluid and changed the filter but we still have problems. The pump knocks really bad, but that is when the system operates good with lots of pressure. when the pump does not operate, there is no knocking sound. Can anyone give a suggestion as to what is wrong. This knocking sound was present before the snag of the branch but only seemed present upon start up when the tractor was cold. After warm up the noise went away. There was always good pressure and the loader worked good. When the line was broke on the posi trac, there was a spring located above the fitting where it broke. I did not see a ball or any other part in there, should there be? I would appreciate any suggestions anyone would have.
Thanks

I owrked for the JD dealer for several years, overhauled a number of these hydraulic pumps on 3020s and 4020s. I think for a knock I would check the couupler and bushings in it first. The pump is not hard to overhaul but to get it out you have to move the front axle foreward, then lower it down from the top. We had a light cable hooked to a plug that screwed in in place of one of the valves on top of the pump and lowered it with an overhead hoist. Mostly o rings in the pump, JD might have a kit for it. There is a transmission pump that feeds the front pump. It is in the back of course, and is pushes low pressure oil to the front pump. I would guess the problem if not in the coupler could be a valve sticking on the pump. you can take those out without taking out the pump. best bet is to pick up a service book on it or at least a parts book to see how it all goes. Good luck on it

Thanks,
This is good info. I think I will visit my local dealer and try to get a manual. I will keep you posted as to what we find.

By posi track do you mean the differential lock or does your tractor have a hrdraulic powered front axel. The noise you hear could be worn loose splines or worn plastic bushings in the pump drive coupler. The hydraulics that come and go is posibly caused by a stuck or hanging stroke control valve in the pump like a piece of something is caught in it.

Sorry I meant the Diff Lock. Do you know if there is an additional pump that feeds the main pump that could be having trouble? Have you ever taken one apart to work on the pump? How many hours do you think for someone to get to the inside of the pump and do I need to get replacement gaskets ahead of time?

What you described makes sense, I just don't know what to make of the problem getting really bad after the line broke and it running low on fluid.

Thanks for your help, any additional thoughts would be greatly appreciated. I wont be able to dig into in until Nov 10th so I will let you know what I find.
Thanks
Albert

When the system ran out of oil a piece of junk could easily have dilodged and stuck in the main pump. There is a transmission pump that charges the main pump it stops when you step on the clutch. If you are running a loader and are doing a lot of clutching aroud the pump can starve for oil. The oil cooler acts as a reservoir to keep things going for a little while this is why when you hold the clutch and raise the loader it goes smooth and fast at first and then starts to chatter. Putting the tractor in neutral and letting the clutch out restores the oil supply. Getting back to your question Deere has a rebuild kit for your hyd. pump. It takes an hour or so to get a pump out they are heavy and akward.
I block up the frot end the loader will raise the front up. 4 bolts and 2 tierods get the front end off it takes 2 people to handle it. Stick a log bar in one of the front axel width ajustment holes for leverage to keep it from floping and roll it to one side. To get the pump out unhook the presure and feed lines, remove the drive coupler and the banjo bolt on top that one takes a 1 1/4" wrench. There is a small bleed line to. To drop the pump get a 2x8 about 5' long and have a couple guys stand on each side of the tractor and hold it up under the pump. Take out the 4 bolts that hold the pump mounting frame to the engine and pry it off the dowel pins it will drop right out be careful its heavy. It would be best to have a dealer or someone with experance rebuild it. When you put it back have 2 guys holding it up and a 3rd aligning the pump and getting the bolts started.

This makes sense. I do see a slight problem since the party that owned this before us, replaced the front end with a much heavier one and thus it will take a little more effort to remove.
Thanks

You can also use a lifting crane (cherry picker) and borrow the lifting tool from your dealer. All it amounts to is a cable and the fitting that goes through the banjo fitting welded to a hook. Makes removal and installation safer and easier. If your front pump is actually knocking and not your front coupler you are probably looking at spending a lot of money. Make for sure the shaft that goes onto the pump is tight and has not worn the splines.

The part about spending a lot of money if the pump is damaged does worry me and I hope that it is something a little easier such as the spline etc. Does the whole pump have to be removed to fix the coupling or spline?
Thanks
