What is the differences between a 4955 and a 4960 also what changes did they make in the 8000 series tractor engines?

4955 and 4960 are really close. The 4960 will have exhaust on side of cab as the 4555 will not. I am not sure of horse power spec off hand on these. Both are good tractors. They both have some electronics. The eight thousand series is a totally different beast all together. They are completely electronic. Many people think that the only difference in an 8300 and a 8400 is horsepower out of the same engine. This is wrong. The 8400 has a coolant port around the firing ring and injectors to keep the heat down in these two areas. The 8300 does not. The eight thousand series has excellent hydraulic capabillities also.
The 55 and 60 series tractors will handle a planter with dual vaccum motors as well though.

Illinois Red, The early 81, 82 and 8300 tractors were 7.6 Liter engines and later changed to the 8.1 engine. All 8400 John Deere tractors were 8.1. Allot of people didn't know this or seem to forget it. Just a tid bit on the subject. Dave W.

Like Dave said the early smaller 8000's had the 7.6 these were the engines without the water cooling you are talking about.. this was on the 8.1... Not all the 8.1's are the same.. look the same on the outside, but depending on its application.. combine, 7000, 8000, 9000, OEM uses, and others... the internal parts vary.. Exp.. a 8310 and 8410, have different pistons and rods, and of course a different computer program..

Some of the very.. very late 4955's also had the side exhaust, like the 4960's.. I have also seen a few 4955's with an eletronic governors like on the 8000's.. I think some of these were a trial project.. JDGnut

I had a reliable source tell me a couple of years ago that when the 8000 series was being engineered that it originally had a 24v positive ground system on it to handle the electronics. I can't speak for everyone else but I for one am glad that they figured out how to make 12v negative ground work. Really all in all these tractors seem to be holding up very well so far.

I don't know about the 24V pos ground.. but yes they do seem to be holding up good. Had a few problems here and there, but most have been worked out.. Bean counters cost the serious expense by changing the material in some of the clutchs, and created a big modification that was done to many of the early 8000's.. Keep the Rats out of the wiring harness and all will be even better... Have you had a chance to drive the 8000 Twenty's????? Later
