I have a 1050 that I am unable to shift the PTO without grinding the gears, unless I turn motor off and shift it before I start it back up. Is there a PTO clutch adjustment inside the little side window cover on the transmission or do I need to replace the entire clutch? The main clutch is working fine with about 3/4 of inch play in the clutch pedal. If I do need to replace the clutch, is there any specialty tools needed?
Thanks
Bill

The adjustment through the window is small. How many hours are on your tractor? Do you have a loader on it. The clutch is two stage. When you push the pedal down the first half of travel releases the drive clutch the second half releases the PTO clutch. If the adjustment for the drive clutch is used up you will not have enough travel to release the PTO Clutch. I had to replace the standard clutch in my tractor. The replacement is a heavy duty the light duty that comes in the tractor is not available.

Bill I have owned a 1050 for nine years and been around them for over 15 years and have yet to see one that has not gotten stuck. I use mine most of the time with a frontend loader and boxblade, but do find it to be a pain when I need the PTO. Mine is stuck now, I have not had time to deal with it. I was told there were some adjusting bolts that could be accessed through the cover plate on the left side of the bell housing. Maybe the first one of us to have any success with this can let the others know how they did it. These are great tractors if you can keep brakes on them and the clutch does not stick!

I have the same problem on my 950. It is not uncommon for the clutch to rust and stick to the pressure plate. In fact, my manual says to clamp the clutch pedal down if it will sit unused for extended periods of time. If you can get to the clutch thru the side window, you might get a screw driver in to separate the clutch from the pressure plate. Mine does not have a opening in the right place.
I have tried engaging my brushhog and dropping it into tall grass with the clutch down. I even tried lowering it slowing onto a small stump with the clutch down. Neither would break the clutch loose. Looks like my only option is to break the tractor apart and replace the clutch.

Hey BB, thanks for the update, that little inspection window I have is back further into the trans, directly below the shift lever. I will have to look into getting something into the housing to free the clutches apart. It would be nice if there was some kind of inspection cover on the housing.
Thanks
Bill...

If you figure out a way to do it, let me know. I have just about given up. I feel like I could split the tractor myself, I just don't know if I want to take that on. At the same time, I suspect it would cost a bundle to have it done. Having an FEL makes it more difficult.

I have a 1987 1050 with just over 1000 hours on it and am having cluth problems as well. Called the locale JD Dealer and they want $2000+ to put in a new clutch. The clutch assembly runs in the neighbor hood of $1500 from JD.
Think I will tackle changing the clutch myself.
Has anyone ever did this and how difficult is it?
