what was the first year for square axles on j.d. b? I have a "b" sn:219580 which should make my tractor an early 1948. But I was informed by several good sources that j.d. did not use square axles on the "B" until 1950. My B has square axles, cast iron wheels and box 6 speed transmission. This tractor was bought new by my grandfather, so I know it has never been modified in any way. Any reply is greatly appreciated.

We have a '49 B serial no 257817, which has square axles, no fenders, and no holes drilled on the top of the axles for said fenders. We got the tractor with a New Idea-Horn loader which attaches to the front studs on the axle where fenders would normally attach. Tractor was in my wife's family since about 1951, and we are not able to document any changes or modifications to the axle. Believe it came without fenders.

Russ is right about the serial number and the clamshell fenders. The single shift 6 speed was introduced with # 201000. There were both cast iron and pressed steel rear wheels.

With John Deere you never know. The other day I saw a B with square axles and no holes drilled in the top for the clamshell fenders. Russ

You're right again - Deere did seem to use up parts that would fit when changing to a new model. Maybe the one you saw was one of the ones built before the official changeover to the square axle.

None of the John Deere tractors I was familiar with in Central Indiana in those days had fenders, so I couldn't comment on the holes drilled or not drilled.

Well the parts book lists the flat top fender, which fits the square axle as S/N 260984 and up which is the 1950 year. Russ

I meant the clamshell fender. Russ
