Replaced the head back on the 40. Started up, and ran great, BUT at after setting at idle for a few minutes, noticed I'd get a little white 'smoke'(vapor) out of the exhaust. After reving tractor, smoke disappears. Under load didn't notice smoke. When I let it set idling, and start smoking, when I'd put it gear and start moving, 'smoke' smelled somewhat like antifreeze, which obviously leads me to believe leaking head gasket (brand new!). Head's milled, block was milled so confident not the problem.

Could I be seeping a little water at high-vacuum idling condition? Not noticeable under power?

Here's my bad decision.....in the past I've had good results using a copper spray-on coating (Permatex), but was unfortunately at my father-in-laws, and did not have any. So I used a typical antiseize around the gasket to try and help seal (or so I thought, duh!), and see what it would do.
Bad decision...now I think I've got a slow leak !

Any (positive) thoughts?

I bet you got a cracked head,There known for that.
Milling doesn't do anthing but smooth out the
head surface, the block could need the same thing.

Was the head pressure tested for cracks? The M & 40 with the thermosyphen circulation, perhapes low coolant level sometime & 46+ years of service have been known to leak. Shepard's have new castings for a reasonable price instead of welding an old head. Those little 40's sure sound good don't they. All bark & bite too.

George, seeing as the 40 doesn't use a pressurized cooling system I have a hard time believing you are leaking coolant into the combustion chambers while it is running. That would be more apt to happen while it is sitting. Run it under load for a while & see if the white smoke disappears after it burns the moisture from the crankcase & head area. Make sure there isn't any water in the air cleaner cup to be pulled in while running & make sure the fuel is clean & water free. It probably wouldn't hurt to change the oil either.

Just did the head on my 39B. Have not started it yet. The dealer said to soak it oil for 15 minutes and don't use any gsket material.

George, on top of the head is what I call the "water manifold" (no parts catalog handy). It is a casting that bolts to the top of the head and the upper radiator hose fastens to the other end of the casting. My guess is that the leak is at the gasket where this piece fastens to the head.
