I finally got back to the A. The tractor ran ok with the gov. disconnected and a rod extended back for a hand throttle. I pulled the gov. today and the yoke fell down, I heard it tinkle as it went, sounded like all the way. I cant touch or find it with a magnet. Is the plate just forward of the oil drain going to allow me access or where should I start? Thanks for any help. Bob

Bob, that plate isn't a plate it's the oil pump & if you pull it you won't be happy as the drive coupling will fall off & you still won't get the pump body out as there are oil lines connected inside the case. Your best bet is to pull the cover on the top of the engine crankcase as that will allow full crankcase access.

The Plate forward of the drain plug is the Oil Pump, which is not removable by taking the bolts out, you have to disconnect the oil lines. A more likely option is to open the crankcase cover, forward of the gear shift. You will need that opened to time the governor anyway. Hope this helps.

what needs to be timed in the governor? every time i have put a governor back on i havent timed anything all i have done is bring the left cylinder to compression and line the l/h impulse on the flywheel with the case mark then install the governor with the mag drive slots running straight across from front to rear. i didnt realize the governor had to be timed and what hapens if i dont time it and how do i time it. i havent ever had any problem by not timing the governor.

What you just said you do is a rough way of timing the governor. The reason for doing it is that the governor shaft does time the mag/ distributor. Your method of timing is 'good enough' because the sloted adjustments on the mag/distributor are very forgiving. However there are timing marks (double punch marks) on the governor and cam gears for this purpose.

Al, you are doing this job the right way. There is a mark on the governor gear but it just has to be lined up either straight up or straight down to install the governor. The mag slot will be horizontal when it is right. No need of making this job more complicated than it is. If you line up this mark on the governor to a mark on the camshaft your tractor will be out of time. Keep doing what you're doing. Hope this helps. Mike

Thanks Mike, i e mailed Clooney last night and he said almost exactly the same thing that if i lined the governor up with the cam marks the mag drive would be off. For the life of me i couldnt think of what in the governor needed to be timed. but what do i know i cant even spell georgia right.
