Problems starting a B.

My B has been running OK recently. It would start fairly quickly, but was only firing well on one cylinder due to a distributer cap that was well past its prime... Anyway when I replaced the cap the tractor will not start. It will fire once or 2xs, lots of smoke (white and black) then stop. And it is taking a long time of cranking to get to that point. Any suggestions as to what to look for or do?

Thanks,

Karl

Karl, do you have the wires back on correctly? (they could have been reversed when you put the cap on or the distributor could have been put in 180* out of time at some other time & you put the wires back on for a correctly timed distributor). Try reversing the plug wires at the cap & see if it will fire. You probably should try new spark plugs, if the old ones were marginal but were firing due to a higher KV caused by a large rotor to cap gap the new cap could have lowered the KV to the plugs enough that it bleeds off prior to jumping the plug gap. As a final step re-install the old cap to see if the cap change is the problem.

Clooney,

I changed out the plugs as I looked at them they were both fouled out. So I replaced them and tried again. THe tractor fired right away ran a few seconds and then died again. My battery is dying so it isn't cranking the engine over quick enough to try and start it again, any other ideas? I checked the wires they are plugged right. When the tractor did run it did sound much better but it isn't continuing to run. Any ideas?

Thanks,

Karl

Karl, if you have a volt meter or 6 volt test light make sure the ignition coil is staying powered after it starts. Have you tried the old cap? Maybe the old rotor isn't the correct one for the new cap. It wouldn't hurt to make sure you don't have a fuel problem as usually a start & quick stall is fuel. If all this doesn't find the problem make sure the condenser is tight & try to open the point gap a little bit.

I haven't tried the old cap. I've looked both of them over, they look identical except for the old one being severely worn. The rotor is new... It most likely is a fuel problem. I have a question... will my timing settings, fuel settings etc. change because of the new cap and the tractor running strongly on both cylinders or no?

Also, what is the correct way of starting a B? This is my first 2-cylinder and I also want to be sure I am starting it right.

Thanks,

Karl

Karl, the new cap has no effect on ignition timing but could require you to change the carb settings due to better combustion. There is no absolute best way to start any J.D. tractor as they all very due to carb settings, compression, choke valve sealing & engine condition. Most of my electric start J.D.'s like 1/4 throttle, full choke until started or at least an attempt to run, then no choke from then on, in really cold weather maybe 1/2 choke after starting until some warm up. But mine usually start with very little cranking, if after a few tries yours doesn't start go to no choke or at least less choke as you might have it flooded. You were saying your battery was running down, if it is still low there might not be enough voltage available to the coil during cranking to get a good spark. You might want to charge it or just pull start the tractor to get it to run. If you have been trying to start the tractor for a while now you could have the cylinder walls washed clean of oil by unfired gasoline & almost no compression (that happens easily on worn engines) so you might try putting about 2oz. of oil in each spark plug hole then cranking or pull start the tractor as at high cranking speeds the compression will be higher due to less time to leak by the pistons or valves.

I really can't say that there is no compression as the starter has a hard time kicking the engine over when the petcocks are closed due to the newly rebuilt engine. I will take your advise and I'll get back to you later today to tell you what happened etc. Thanks for the help!

Thanks,

Karl
