Ok....I got that replacement boneyard head for my '53 40. It's the same casting number as the original. Both heads are obviously the same, except the boneyard head is missing a 'washer' out of a large cast hole on the block side of the casting, in the water passage. It's about an 1"-1-1/2" in diameter, and is crimped in the head. If any of this makes sense, what is this round disc with a hole in it for? I assume it's for restricting the flow (if you'll call it that...)

Obviously it's there for a reason.....so I'll see if I can get the old out and put in the 'new', but was curious....

Also...does the 40 have a thermostat? If so, where?

THanks

Hi,

That's a freeze plug. Most heads and blocks have one or more of these in them somewhere. It's meant to take the force of water expansion when it turns to ice because the owner was too stupid to use anti-freeze and didn't drain the water out in time. It's intended to prevent the cast iron from cracking.

Could you put a convex soft plug in there and drill the hole after putting it in.

Dave, that is a M-460T expansion plug, you might try Deere to see if it is still in stock. I'm not really sure why it's there but probably for casting concerns. The 40 is a thermo-siphon so doesn't use a water pump therefore no water pump.

The temperature setting unit is on the back of the block, just above the flywheel housing. It is a mechanical unit with a wire going up to the gauge. I just rebuilt my '54 40. Good luck with yours.

Thanks Andy, but that's not what I'm talking about. This is a small metal disc with a hole in the center that is 'swedged' into the head, on the head face (head gasket side). Without the disc, this hole would be about an 1"-1/4" in diameter.
